A month short of ten years ago, we put our cash together and got Andy a tortoise for his birthday. He was the size of a doughnut and since we weren’t exactly sure how to wrap a tortoise, we poked holes in a takeout Tupperware and handed it to him. Andy baptized his new friend, Astragalus, and while we went off for school, and back, and off again, the tortoise, much like Miami, grew every year but always seemed to stay just like we always remembered it to be. Even after we all moved on to other cities, Andy’s parents adopted Astragalus and he lived like a king in the suburbs of Miami.
Fast forward a few years later, and the day finally came where Astro had to move on to something bigger, something better and a local animal sanctuary in the Everglades offered to give him a new home and new friends. I was there for his first day in Andy’s life, and so I’d sure as hell be there for his last.
